Sunshine finally arrived in the Cairngorms today, and it was celebrated with tea and cake in the garden. After all that rain and sleet we’ve been having, it was such a relief to have the day we’ve today – it made the dream of maybe… one time… soon.. of having a BBQ feel just a little bit less like a dream! The garden is coming to life slowly but surely, another few weeks now and things should really come to life. We can’t wait!

We woke up to a thick blanket of snow yesterday, and it took a couple of seconds to register that it was in fact snow outside when we got up in the morning. After that gorgeous warm weather we had last week this was the last thing we expected.. but that’s the Highlands for you! Pretty as the snow is, we do hope it goes away again very quickly and let spring do its job in the garden.

A clear sign that winter is coming to an end is the cheerful sight of a carpet of snowdrops, or snowbells in this instance. They bravely emerge well before other flowers and, deceptively hardy, will take anything that winter can throw at them. The crocuses brings that much needed colour to the spring garden, as well as the helleborus torquatus – a gorgeous nodding spring plant. Lurking between the plants this morning was the first slow-worm of the year, warming itself in the spring sunshine.

We’ve given the tearoom some TLC over the winter months; lick of paint, new curtains and the trusted old wooden floor got a well deserved scrub & oil. I think our tearoom was feeling a little sad and neglected after all the attention we gave our new one in Kingussie – and not wanting to be outsmarted we wanted to give it the same lovely furniture as well. We are so so pleased with it and hope you will be too!

After years of heavy ground frost the concrete slabs outside the tearoom had definitely seen better days… but now its all sleek and level and not a pot-hole in sight, and hopefully stubbed toes incidents will be non existent from now on.

Its been a busy 2 months here at Inshriach Nursery! Unusually for this time of the year we haven’t had any snow, its the first time in many years that we have been able to be outside working in the garden in February. Having the weather on our side has been quite a struck of luck as its taken us weeks to clear up the four large trees that came down during the December storm. Amazing how much debris it created, and we were all pretty tired of lumping branches and logs at the end. But on the bright side we’ve got a fabulous amount of fire wood that should do us well next winter!

Apart from having a general good old spring clean everywhere, the tearoom is getting some attention too. At the moment we’ve got men hard at work relaying slabs outside the tearoom and greenhouses, as our old ones were gaping and sliding all over the place, and we found out the reason why when the slabs got removed; There was an incredible amount of sand underneath them, even the builders were amazed, its was any sandcastle builder’s dream! But in a few days now the new slabs will go down and should look brilliant. New furniture has been ordered for the tearoom and the inside is getting a well deserved lick of paint. Stress levels are only simmering at the moment, but they are most likely to rise as we are getting dangerously close to opening day on 1st March… We’ve still got quite a long to-do-list, which includes fixing broken greenhouse glass, painting doors, making the gaping hole in the ground by the fallen tree safe + much more… hey ho hey ho hey ho off to work we go!

What better way of reusing old bone china plates than to make them into a beautiful cake stand! Kimmi uses old, unused or unwanted china plates and bowls and gives them a new lease of life. Such an inventful way to recycle your grandmothers old china, or any other porcelain plates you might have tucked away somewhere gathering dust. We are hoping to get a selection of these cake stands to sell here in our tearoom for when we open 1st March.

It’s been a busy year here at Inshriach Nursery & The Potting Shed Tearoom, and we are already making plans for next year. Setting the new year off we are re-furbishing the tearoom at the nursery! We are really proud of our new tearoom in Kingussie and we’ve been dying to get the same look and feel here. Come January the paint and brushes will come out, and new furniture is being ordered. Then there is of course the endless task of the garden, and after all the winds we’ve been having this winter it’s going to be quite a job to tidy up all the debris. The greenhouses also got a battering so some glass cutting and shaky legs on the ladder are on the agenda. On a positive note the mild weather we’re having this winter is doing us a great favour; without all the heavy snow we can get started on our job list good and early.

But first, let the New Year ring in! From all of us here at Inshriach we wish you all a very Happy New Year.

We went out to collect some glass panes that had blown off the green houses and three large spruce trees came cracking down in the garden. Such a shame to loose such a solid feature in our garden, but on the bright side, we now have a whole lot of firewood!

Amazingly, the bird feeders still had birds on them, even when they were being bashed about. The squirrels had the good sense to take cover.

Wondering what the next few months will bring as this time last year we had over a meter off the white stuff, drowning the whole landscape.

Christmas (Jul) preparations in Norway begin on the first Sunday of Advent when Christmas lights are lit in the main streets of towns and villages all over Norway. Most households display an Advent wreath in the living room; four candles adorn the wreath, one of which is lit on each Sunday leading up to Christmas with all four candles being lit on Christmas Eve. The candles and decorations on the wreath are purple but are changed to red for Christmas day. A tall white candle divided equally by 25 red stripes acts a calendar; it is lit daily and allowed to burn down one section each day in the countdown to Christmas.

Traditions
Christmas in Norway is still full of old traditions coming from a time when most people were farmers. On the third Sunday of Advent, a Julenek (bundle of wheat grass) will be put up outside the front door, for the birds to feed off. In the past they would have been put up on either side of the barn door; if small birds starting feeding of it straight away then a good harvest would come the next year. If the Julenek got put up to late or a crow fed on it first then a bad year was ahead of you. This tradition is also believed to have been an offering to the Norse God; Odin.

Baking Christmas cakes and biscuits is a very important part of preparing for the festive season. At least 7 different sorts had to be made to fill up all the cake tins. These are all dry cakes and biscuits, again coming from the time when most people had very little and had to be creative with what ingredients they had. But this does not mean to say that they don’t taste good! And best of all was is they last all the way through Christmas and into the New Year.

St Lucia (Sancta Lucia)
Lucia was a Christian martyr who died around 300 AD. St Lucia is one of the very few saints that Norwegians celebrate with the Feast of St Lucia on the 13th of December. Children in nurseries and primary schools dress in white robes and parade bearing lighted candles while singing the special Lucia song. These little ceremonies end with the children enjoying cakes (Lussekatter) that are baked specifically for this feast day.

‘Lille Julaften’
The 23rd of December is called ‘Lille Julaften’, which literally translates as ‘small Christmas-Eve.’ This is a hectic day when the Christmas tree is decorated, the house is given a final clean and food preparations are made before Christmas Eve itself. Traditionally the home is filled with red Poinsettia, flowering tulips and hyacinth bulbs. There is little use of synthetic adornment as natural evergreens and pine cones are preferred….and are readily available. Anticipation mounts as all the family Christmas presents are now placed under the Christmas tree.

Christmas Eve (Julaften) is the most important day in Scandinavia. The day starts with creamy rice pudding/porridge. As with the lucky sixpence hidden in a Christmas pudding an almond is traditionally stirred into the rice and the lucky finder gets to open a present. And one must never forget to put a bowl of rice pudding outside for the nisse… A nisse is a mythical creature that was believed to look after the farm animals. Figures of the Nisse are very popular Christmas decorations. Julenisse is the Norwegian equivalent to Santa Claus but he is not fat, his reindeer do not fly, and he comes in through the front door rather than down the chimney. He delivers the presents directly to the children on Christmas Eve, for which task an adult volunteer is required in full Julenisse regalia.

Christmas Eve is a real family event and the day is spent with close family and relatives. As evening approaches, just before the Christmas presents are opened, many families gather together, hold hands and walk in a ring around the Christmas tree singing Christmas carols. During the day many Norwegians will make time to remember absent relatives as they will have visited the cemetery to lay reindeer moss wreaths and lighted candles in front of the headstones. A stirring sight to behold as hundreds of candles flicker in the nordic darkness.

Christmas Day and New Year
Christmas day is a very private day when families relax together and enjoy Christmas dinner; cod is favoured in the north, special smoked, salted lamb is dished up on the west coast while lamb or pork ribs appear on tables in the east. The left over rice pudding from Christmas Eve is served chilled with red currant sauce for desert.
Boxing Day is a social day for meeting up with friends. The period between Boxing Day and the New Year is called romjul and is marked by a tradition known as julebukk when children, dressed in Nisse outfits, call at houses to sing carols in return for cakes and sweets.
